My story

From her first solo to travelling with her church youth choir across the U.S. and Canada, and later fronting indie bands throughout her teens, Amy Sullivan’s life was on track for a promising career in music.

After being discovered at a GMA Canada conference in 1997, the Canadian singer-songwriter went on to partner with a Juno-nominated producer to record an album in hopes of launching a dream solo career. The dream unravelled after production was delayed, and Amy was unable to share the album in time with a record label that had shown interest.

Broken and disappointed, Amy released a single from the album, but shortly after, walked away from her dream to sing.

But, what she thought was the end of a dream was the setup for a new beginning.

During an over 10-year hiatus, Amy focused on living a “normal life” as a wife and mother of three. While coping with her son’s special needs diagnosis, Amy found herself writing and journaling to process the struggle and isolation she felt. All the while, there was a stirring in her heart to help families experiencing similar challenges.

An encounter at a parent support group would be the turning point that would give her a new sense of purpose, breathing new life into a buried dream. At that moment, Amy realized there was a hidden community that needed help. No longer bound by her past, she felt free to answer the call, saying yes to music again.

“I felt like that was the point where I just said let’s do it. I began to understand why it didn’t work before. All the years of turmoil prepared me for this,” Amy says. “It prepared me to reach the mothers who feel they have nothing, completely isolated and feel left out of what a normal childhood or parenting experience should look like. It showed me how to speak to people who feel like the doctors don’t understand and friends have no idea of what this life is really like.”

Her “yes” led her to Nashville to participate in a songwriters retreat in 2018 where she wrote her first single, Pray. Influenced by the sounds of Pop and Smooth R&B, along with artists including Sade, Crystal Lewis, Diana Krall, and Charlie Puth, Amy returns with her first self-titled EP in March 2021. As a singer and speaker rooted in honesty and vulnerability, she hopes the songs and messages she delivers bring hope and encouragement.

“I feel led to tell the story of what’s happened in my life, and the story always leads back to who God is and how He can use the hard things we experience to help others,” Amy shares.

“Special needs parents should know they are never alone, and my prayer is that by sharing my own struggle and the hope I’ve found in the midst of it all, it will encourage them to keep going too.”
